cheap thrills

I am unduly entertained by reading the comments on
the NYT monthly Wine School series.
I am half convinced many of the participants
are trolling, but I think it is just wishful thinking.
Highly recommend!

I will have to check that out after my boys go to sleep tonight! With a glass of wine in my hand... or perhaps beer...

Just finished reading Paul Fussell's Class: A Guide through the American Status System. It's both hilarious and painful. I enjoyed Kate Fox's Watching the English slightly more because it is about someone else's culture, so a but less cutting. I could see much of what Fussell was saying, but I'd have said 'That's just how people are' without ascribing their behaviour to class. I can recommend his book if only for a different outlook.

Thanks Shelley, I will have to look for the book. It sounds a bit like Joseph Epstein's Snobbery book, very funny and acute.
We're just products of the culture we are raised in so it's impossible to escape all the signaling, but once you are aware of it at least a new perspective comes into play. I find class/snobbery/taste so interesting!
