Is it comfortable? I'm afraid my old bones (even with all the meat on them) need a bit more padding. Even a really firm mattress leaves me feeling bruised in the mornings. Still, that's a lovely hard wood floor and there is all that serene emptiness...

Shelley, I've always slept on a futon on the floor so skipping the futon on sleeping right on the floor isn't such a large difference. Your body adapts to the environment so if you HAD to sleep on the floor, eventually you would get used to it. When I am traveling and have to sleep on a mattress I usually end up on the floor because I find the mattress too soft so I'm just the opposite of you!

I have a beautiful wicker sleigh bed (sounds sort of granny but it is very colonial tropic) and I love it so much but I actually prefer my mattress on the floor. I don't like the thought of bugs or dust being under the bed...that I don't know about!

I slept on a futon mattress growing up, and although now my parents sleep on their beds, they swear that a futon (or a firmer mattress) is better for our back. Your house reminds me of the "innermost house" - so simple, minimalistic and serene. Have you seen their house? It's simplicity at its best! http://www.innermosthouse.com/

Yuko, I've seen the innermost house - isn't it like a little slice of heaven? What a serene setting. Believe me, my home has plenty of clutter stashed around.

Stephen, a wicker sleigh bed sounds beautiful. I love plantation/British colonial style. Yeah, there is the issue of mysterious creepy crawlies under your bed, but when the bed is directly on the floor there is potential for those same critters to crawl right into bed with you! Fortunately that has yet to happen to me, but I'm sure once it does it will be the end of my floor sleeping days.

I love the simplicity of this and perhaps the familiarity of the set up being Oriental? My brother slept on MY futon when I moved and he offered to 'look after' it - a decade later he still loves it the best :-) I think I hate soft beds more than rock hard ones.
I don't see any pillows?

Maybe it is an Asian thing SilkPath, not sure. Growing up I was the only one who slept on the floor so I don't know where I got the idea from, but I do find it much more comfortable. No pillows. So long as I have a blanket I can sleep anywhere, I really don't need much!

I love the minimalism of your room. I could sleep on a futon, but I would struggle to get off the floor in the mornings.

Hi Laura, thanks. I like a uncluttered bedroom, but really, I could sleep anywhere. The getting up and down off the floor is the part that is good for you! I dread the day when I can get up and down easily from the floor.
